Poor children had to learn their parents trade so they could earn money to support their family. For the kids who could go to school it was a very harsh environment. In ancient Rome teachers believed that children learned through fear, so if a child got something wrong they were whipped and beaten. There were two types of schools in Rome. The first was for children of the ages five to twelve; in this part of school they learned basic mathematical skills and how to read and write. After they graduated that part of school they could go to a more specialized school, where they could take public speaking or mathematics. Girls didn't go to school. If their parents wanted their daughters to learn how to read and write they would teach them at home. Girl also learned how to be good wives and how do to supervise basic kitchen work. Girls could be married off at age 12,so it left little time for school. Writing and Architecture he Romans took many ideas about architecture from the Greeks and Etruscans.
