Rome's first period of expansion was a series of wars going on for more than 200 years. Gradually, Rome took control of the whole Italian peninsula. Soon after, the last Etruscan king was overthrown and the Romans began to expand their territory and made a treaty with their Latin neighbors which said, "There shall be peace between the Romans and all communities of Latins as long as heaven and earth endure." With these new allies, the Romans began to conquer common enemies like the tribes living in the hills around Rome. |

Rome is in Italy, including a peninsula and islands around southern Europe. There's an old Roman myth about them starting their city. As the story goes, a princess had two twin boys. The twins father was the God of war. The king, or the princess’s uncle, was paranoid that one of the boys would take his place of being king. He then ordered his men to drown the twins, but before they died, a wolf rescued them. When the two boys, Romulus and Remus, grew up, they built a town on the edge of the Tiber River, the one where the wolf rescued them. However, they argued over who would rule the town. In the end, Romulus murdered his brother so he could become king. Romulus became king, and called his city Rome.
